The town of Ladysmith
Yesterday
Ladysmith was founded to provide living space for the miners and their
families who worked at the Extension Coal Mine to the north. Many buildings
(commercial and residential) were moved to this site via rail and oxen. Some
have been refurbished and still stand today. Ladysmith was named after a
victorious battle in the Boer War, which took place in Ladysmith, South
Africa. The municipality was incorporated on June 3, 1904.
Today
Pop.
8,500. Ladysmith offers excellent services and facilities for new
residents. Also, commercial expansion is available at Coronation Square Mall
and in the historic downtown core. Work is in progress to invite/provide a
variety of development opportunities in Ladysmith, including waterfront,
marina, health care, value-added wood produces industrial park, restoration
and operation of a steam locomotive.
Tomorrow
Ladysmith eyes the future with optimism. Once a single resource economy,
her economy will now be sustained through tourist-recreational-commercial
development, with an eye to light industrial and development of our
waterfront.
